Local Roads No.1
Abney, Hope Valley, Peak District. Winding its way from just outside of the village of Hathersage to the top of a dramatic ridge above Great Hucklow, the 'Abney Climb' as it's known locally is one of the best there is. Quiet, peaceful and works just as well for a steady cruise as it does for a decent training climb. Even on this cold February day the landscape never fails to impress.
You start the climb from the main road at the bottom and straight into the steepest part of the climb. The gradient soon eases for a while before it steepens again up to the start of the steady section by Highlow Hall. This is a stunning part of the road where you can enjoy a steady cruise while taking the impressive views of the deep valley to the left. From here it's another little ramp up into the tiny Hamlet of Abney. The road is pretty beat up here so watch out for some big holes and plenty of mud in winter! Out of Abney you hit a short decent down to a small bridge over a river set in a small woodland which gives of vibes of the Strines moors. Up and round the corner and the woodland suddenly ends and you're out in open farmland and moorland where the views really open up on your way up to the gliding club. If the weather is nice and you're not in a hurry, watch the gliders lifting off on the small airfield to your right. It's then just a few hundred meters to the summit looking over the next valley along.
This climb is well know by locals for the tranquil scenery and low amount of traffic, but for visitors to the area it's usually overlooked. It's a must ride if you haven't already and at only 5 minutes away from the shop be sure to call in for a coffee on your way! The top of the climb is also the perfect gateway to other gems in the Peak.
